Our History

Balassa Laboratories has its roots in the 1930s with its founder, Joseph Balassa, a Budapest-born pharmacist who immigrated to the USA in 1924. Joseph's journey through various American states during the Great Depression, culminating in New Jersey, was marked by his dedication to compounding medicines. This passion led him to open his own pharmacy in Newark, New Jersey, where he invented numerous medicinal and toiletry formulas, laying the foundation for Balassa Laboratories. The company's inception was a testament to Joseph's resilience and innovation during an economically challenging era.

The legacy of Balassa Laboratories was furthered by Nick DiGaetano, a son of immigrants who started working at Joseph's pharmacy as a young boy. Inspired by Joseph, Nick pursued a career in pharmacy, maintaining a close bond with his mentor. Following Joseph's retirement and eventual passing in 1967, Nick inherited the pharmacy and Joseph's invaluable formulae, including the renowned corn, callus, and wart remover. Nick, with the help of his children, Jim and Margaret, has sustained Balassa Laboratories, Inc., operating it with the same dedication as Joseph. Today, Nick approaches his 93rd birthday and no longer actively participates in the business, but it is lead by his children, Jim and Margaret DiGaetano symbolizing the enduring spirit and commitment that defines Balassa Laboratories.
